Common Logo Design Terms

The term “logo” is often used interchangeably with the terms brand, trademark or logotype. Unique logos and trademarks became more popular in the early 1900′s; by the end of WWII, visual simplicity in logo design was an international, commercialized movement.

Today your company’s logo can be stamped or engraved on products, but is more commonly to be found in modern advertising and communications media such as print, web, television, e-mail, document stationery, etc.

Logo – Logo design is one of the most important and difficult tasks in the field of graphic design. A logo is the font (logotype) and/or image (ideogram) that personifies a company’s identity and brand, and should create long-term customer recognition.

Logotype vs Ideogram – Use of a specific font with the company name and possibly tag line, is known as a Logotype. Use of an image such as a sign, icon, symbol or emblem in conjunction with the company name is known as an Ideogram.

Colour – Because colour is an important factor in brand recognition, it is critical in logo design. Attention-grabbing reds and oranges are common in real estate and pharmaceutical logos; greens are often associated with recycling, waste reduction, and medical/pharmaceutical; etc.

Dynamic Logo – A logo that has an element that can be changed depending on the situation, location or timing etc.
